Subject: problems loading Scala files with MOTU Ethno2

I got Ethno2 and tried an experiment.
I went to http://www.huygens-fokker.org/scala/scl_format.html
I selected "an example of a valid (Scala) file":

I copied it, saved it as plain text with .scl suffix, loaded it into the UserTuning folder of Ethno2, opened it and tried loading the file.
Nothing happened :-((

Is there anyone that can suggest something?

You seem to have done everything correctly.  Are you
using the Open button on the Scala toolbar?  If so,
you should see the text "1/4-comma meantone scale.
Pietro Aaron's temperament (1523)" appear in the Scala
window.  To see the scale itself, type "show" in the
white area along the bottom of the window.

Carl,
I don't have Scala installed. I am on a Mac and use LMSO.
I tried another experiment though:
I downloaded the Scala archive at http://www.huygens-fokker.org/docs/scales.zip,  unzipped it and copied a few .scl files to Ethno2's UserTuning folder and they DO NOT work.
They should be Scala compliant, shouldn't they?
It looks like a bug to me!

Sorry!  I didn't catch that Ethno2 is a synth.  Sounds like
one for their support/forums/kVr/etc.  -Carl

I haven't received my own Ethno 2 box myself, so I'm unable to  
confirm what works and what does'nt !
I am glad to know at least it has a UserTuning folder - Does your  
tuning appears in the user presets menu ?

To open and save one's own Scala files and to have direct access to  
them from the browser was among the main requests I addressed to the  
developpers before I started to work on the tunings. What you did  
seems to be a correct operation, so unless there is an other way to  
do it, it looks like a bug in the directory.
Have you tried simply to drag and drop any Scala file or a valid copy  
into the microtuning window ? that's supposed to be one way it works,  
according to the answers I got originally from the developpers, and  
also what the MOTU website says at the bottom lines of that page :

The other way (the saving process) was what you did.
Just a silly idea here : what happens if you drop a scl file in any  
of either my "geographic" or "scale system" folders ? ... (save all  
your data before, OK ?! ;)
Of course one has to be sure by editing a scl file that it is still a  
valid Scala file (by opening it in Scala it will tell), but since you  
used original scl files from the Scala archive there should be no  
problem.
I transmitted your experiences to the developpers in charge of Ethno  
2, and will let you know their answer.

Tha	t does not solve the problem, but in the meantime if you need a  
1/4-comma meantone scale try "appalachian" in the "North American" or  
the "Meantone" section -
(it's a synchronous beating improvement of a 1/4 syntonic comma  
meantone temperament)

thanks for your reply!

I tried the following experiments:

1) I copied a Scala file from Ethno2's Tuning folder to the UserTuning folder. then I opened Ethno2 and the file pasted into the UserTuning DOES NOT work (it does when it is on its original location)!

2) I downloaded the Scala archive at http://www.huygens-fokker.org/docs/scales.zip,  unzipped it and copied a few .scl files to Ethno2's UserTuning folder and they DO NOT work.

3) I moved a few Scala files (from the above mentiond archive) to your "geographic" and/or "scale system" folders. they DO NOT work.

Let's see what MOTU has to say about it.

This is the answer I got from one of the Motu developpers this  
morning : they were aware of this problem with the user presets, and  
it is now corrected (however he has not precised when the update was  
available).
Too bad, it's been 3 months since I sent the tunings and proposed to  
beta-test the microtuning functions, but my request was not heard.

In the meantime, he says you may drag and drop your scala files in  
either one of the microtuning zones, as I told you.
Have you tried it ?

I had already tried moving files from the Scala archive to the "Geographic" and/or "Scale System" folders.
It does not work, the new scales are not seen by Ethno2.
let's hope they release an update soon.
